Anesthesiology Department at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (MZRH)

Our Dedicated Team

At the heart of our Anesthesiology Department are three dedicated anesthesiologists, skilled in providing comprehensive anesthesia and critical care services. They excel in diagnostics, invasive and non-invasive procedures, life-saving emergencies, training, research, and treatment across all age groups.

Our team also includes two residents currently in training, with one on the brink of graduation, and two registrars focused on ICU and outpatient care. We collaborate closely with our specialized critical care nurses, including two critical care nurse specialists, one of whom leads as the ICU nurse in charge.

Patient Services

Outpatient Services
Our anesthesiology clinics operate Monday to Friday, offering expert consultations to patients from all departments within MZRH and referrals from across the Southern Highlands. We are committed to providing exceptional care and support to every patient we encounter.

Inpatient Services
As primary physicians in all ICUs at MZRH, we provide comprehensive care for patients of all ages. Our dedicated team includes intensivists, anesthesiologists, ICU registrars, physicians, surgeons, and trained ICU nurses. Together, we ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of care.

Our facilities include a General ICU with 19 beds and an Obstetrics ICU with 8 beds. We are also excited to announce the ongoing construction of a new Cardiac ICU, which will add 6 more beds to our capacity.

Anesthesia Services

Our department is responsible for delivering anesthesia for all elective and emergency procedures at both MAIN and META. We care for patients of all ages in our operating theaters, with each case supervised by our experienced anesthesiologists, supported by non-physician anesthetists.

We provide a range of anesthesia services, including General Anesthesia (GA), Spinal Anesthesia (SAB), and peripheral nerve blocks. Our specialized techniques include supraclavicular brachial plexus blocks, axillary blocks, femoral and sciatic nerve blocks, epidural blocks, and caudal blocks in pediatric surgeries, using both single-shot methods and catheters.

Education, Research, and Community Service

Education and Training
We are passionate about education and training. Our department offers a one-year full-time course in anesthesia for non-physicians and a six-month course in Fundamentals of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine (FCCEM) for both physicians and nurses. We also train 4th-year medical students from UDSM-MCHAS, providing them with a comprehensive six-week rotation.

We are excited to announce upcoming advanced training programs, including diploma, advanced diploma, and bachelor's degree courses in critical care medicine. Our department regularly conducts Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions to enhance staff skills and works closely with the Society of Anaesthesiologists of Tanzania (SATA) to improve surgical care nationwide.

Research and Community Services
Our department is deeply invested in research, supporting high-quality studies and collaborations with local and international colleagues. We focus on both short-term and long-term research projects, aiming to advance critical care practices.

We also engage in community education, offering our expertise to churches, mosques, schools, and various groups. Through these initiatives, we strive to enhance public awareness and health outcomes.
