MZRH Pharmacy Services: A Pillar of Excellence and Care

The Pharmacy Department at MZRH Hospital stands as a pillar of excellence, dedicated to providing comprehensive and compassionate pharmaceutical services to patients, clients, and other healthcare providers across the southern highlands zone. As an integral part of the Clinical Support Directorate, the department is composed of fifteen specialized sections and two units, all aimed at ensuring the availability of safe, high-quality, and affordable health commodities. With a highly skilled team of 45 trained professionals and 4 supportive staff, the department is unwavering in its commitment to exceptional patient care.

At MZRH Pharmacy Services, our team comprises highly skilled professionals with diverse and impressive qualifications. We have experts with advanced degrees in clinical pharmacy, clinical research, and health commodities supply chain management. Our team includes individuals with doctoral-level training in pharmacy, seasoned senior pharmacists, and a robust cohort of pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians. Additionally, our dedicated supportive staff ensures seamless operations. Together, we are committed to providing exceptional pharmaceutical care and services to our community.

Comprehensive Pharmacy Services

To enhance access to pharmacy services, our department operates fifteen specialized sections, with three additional sections soon to be inaugurated in the new Maternity Block. Each pharmacy section is tailored to meet the specific needs of our diverse patient groups.

  • Main OPD Pharmacy: Located opposite the main laboratory, this pharmacy provides medication reviews, dispensing, and adherence counseling for chronic disease patients. Open Monday to Saturday, 6:00hrs to 18:00hrs, including public holidays.
  • Radiology Pharmacy: Situated at the entrance of the main radiology building, it serves elderly patients and those with special needs from 6:30hrs to 18:00hrs, Monday to Friday.
  • Emergency Pharmacy: Operating 24/7 within the emergency medicine department, this pharmacy ensures timely access to life-saving medications with reduced patient waiting times.
  • Theatre Pharmacy: Located inside the main operating theatre, this pharmacy enhances patient care by ensuring the availability and proper handling of essential medications during surgeries. It operates 24/7.
  • Grade One Pharmacy: Serving patients in the private ward and clinic, this pharmacy operates 24/7, catering to both insured and cash patients.
  • Inpatient Pediatric Pharmacy: Located at the entrance of the pediatric wards, this pharmacy ensures safe and effective medication use for children, including compounding oral syrups for easy administration. It operates 24/7.
  • Haemato-Oncology Pharmacy Services: Opposite ward 11, this specialized pharmacy manages oncology and hematology medications, ensuring safe and aseptic preparation of chemotherapy infusions. It provides comprehensive patient education on cancer regimens.
  • Infusion and Compounding Unit: Dedicated to preparing customized drug formulations, this unit ensures the availability of medications not readily available on the market. It also produces various intravenous sterile products tailored to patient needs.
  • Inpatient Main Pharmacy: Serving all inpatient wards, including ICU and nephrology, this pharmacy operates from 6:00hrs to 18:00hrs, seven days a week, including public holidays.
  • Main Store: The central hub for drug and supply storage, utilizing an electronic inventory management system to ensure proper storage conditions and efficient distribution. Operates Monday to Friday, 7:30hrs to 15:30hrs.
  • Outpatient Pediatric Pharmacy: Providing specialized services for pediatric hematology, surgery, oncology, and tuberculosis, this pharmacy ensures comprehensive care for children.
  • Methadone Pharmacy: Located at the methadone clinic, this pharmacy offers Methadone Assisted Therapy and related services.
  • Meta Pharmacy: Specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, this 24/7 pharmacy caters to both inpatients and outpatients, including compounding services for neonates.
  • Meta CTC Pharmacy: Dedicated to serving people living with HIV in the obstetrics and gynecology department, offering comprehensive pharmaceutical services and counseling.
  • Main CTC Pharmacy: Located in the internal medicine outpatient clinic, this pharmacy provides services to people living with HIV, including medication management and counseling.
  • Pharmacovigilance Unit: As the zonal center for pharmacovigilance, this unit identifies, assesses, and manages adverse drug reactions, ensuring the safety and efficacy of medications used within the region.

Leading the Way in Innovation and Education

Our department is at the forefront of innovation, operating a small infusion manufacturing unit that enhances patient care through improved quality control and cost-effectiveness. We also play a pivotal role in training pharmacy students from various universities, offering hands-on experience through internships and field attachments.

In collaboration with TMDA, our team ensures high-quality medications through rigorous testing, mentoring, and supervision. We also contribute to palliative care by preparing potent morphine solutions for patients with serious illnesses. Together with other healthcare workers, our department regularly updates the hospital formulary, ensuring it meets the highest standards of care.
