Clinical Research, Training & Consultancy Unit (CRTC Unit)

Roles & Responsibilities

The Clinical Research, Training & Consultancy Unit (CRTC Unit) at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital is dedicated to advancing medical research, training healthcare professionals, and providing consultancy services. The unit operates under the direct supervision of the Executive Director (ED) and is responsible for the following key functions:

  • Develop and Review Policies: Formulate and update hospital research policies and guidelines on research ethics.
  • Fundraising: Solicit research funds from local and international sources.
  • Project Management: Develop, manage, and oversee research projects.
  • Promote Research: Encourage and support research activities among hospital staff.
  • Training Coordination: Organize and coordinate staff training and continuing medical education (CME) programs.
  • Student Placements: Manage placements for local and international students.

Coordination of Research Activities

The unit is staffed by a full-time team, including the Head of Unit and research and training coordinators. It also works closely with:

  • Hospital Research Committee: A multidisciplinary team of 10 members.
  • Mbeya Medical Research Ethics Committee (MMREC): Ensures ethical standards in research.

Coordination of Training Activities

The CRTC Unit is responsible for all training activities within the hospital, including:

  • Staff Training: Organizing both short-term and long-term training programs for hospital staff.
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME): Coordinating CME activities across various departments with the help of designated CME focal persons.

Ongoing Initiatives to Enhance Research Environment

The unit is actively working on several initiatives to create a conducive environment for research, including:

  • Strengthening Electronic Information Systems: Making systems more user-friendly for research purposes.
  • Improving Research Administration: Reducing the time required for protocol review and decision-making.
  • Participant Recruitment: Assisting with the recruitment of patients and study participants.
  • Multidisciplinary Team: Ensuring the availability of qualified healthcare professionals who can contribute to research.
  • Diagnostic Services: Enhancing diagnostic capabilities by introducing new tests that are currently unavailable.
