Mbeya Zonal Referral Laboratory: Excellence in Diagnostics

The hospital's laboratory is a pivotal component of the healthcare system dedicated to providing comprehensive diagnostic services. It has achieved and maintained accreditation to ISO 15189 since 2014, a hallmark of quality assurance that reflects its commitment to excellence and accuracy in all testing processes. The laboratory is equipped with advanced technology and staffed by a team of highly trained professionals, including a number of specialists such as Pathologists, Clinical and Laboratory Microbiologists, Hematologists and Health Laboratory Scientists in various fields of laboratory medicine, ensuring that all diagnostic needs are met with precision and reliability.

Technology, Quality, and Safety

Technology and Equipment: The laboratory boasts the latest in diagnostic technology, including automated analyzers, high-throughput sequencers, and pathology systems. These tools allow for rapid and accurate analysis of samples, ensuring timely results for patients and clinicians.

Quality Control and Safety Measures: Stringent quality control protocols are in place to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and reliability. Regular internal audits, proficiency testing, and continuous monitoring ensure that all processes meet or exceed regulatory requirements. Safety measures are strictly enforced to protect both staff and patients.

Sections of the Hospital Laboratory

Haematology: The Hematology section focuses on the study of blood and its disorders. This includes complete blood counts (CBC), reticulocyte count, peripheral blood smear, Haemoglobin electrophoresis, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, blood films, and tests for blood clotting disorders.

Histopathology: This section involves microscopic examination of tissues to diagnose diseases. This section handles biopsy specimens, surgical resections, and autopsies, providing critical information about the presence and progression of diseases such as cancer. With Cytopathology of cells, the section specializes in the examination of individual cells to identify potential diseases. Common procedures include Pap smears for cervical cancer screening and fine needle aspirations (FNA) for diagnosing lumps or masses.

Clinical Chemistry: The Biochemistry section conducts various chemical analyses of blood and other body fluids. These tests measure levels of enzymes, electrolytes, and other vital substances, providing essential information for the diagnosis and management of metabolic conditions, organ function, and nutritional status.

Serology: Serology section deals with detection of antibodies and antigens in the blood. This section is vital in diagnosing various infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and other conditions through tests such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and rapid tests.

Blood Donation and Transfusion: This section manages the collection, processing, and storage of blood and blood products. It ensures safe and adequate blood supply for transfusions and other medical needs, adhering to strict safety and screening protocols.

OPD/Phlebotomy: The phlebotomy section is responsible for the collection of blood samples as well as other samples (stool, urine etc.) from patients following a request from attending clinician. Highly skilled phlebotomist ensure that samples are collected efficiently and with minimum possible discomfort to the patient, following stringent procedures to maintain sample integrity.

Parasitology: This section focuses on identification and study of parasites that infect humans. This includes microscopic examination of samples for parasites such as Malaria, intestinal worms and protozoa, providing crucial information for diagnosis and treatment.

Tuberculosis Section: The Tuberculosis section provides comprehensive testing for Tuberculosis diagnosis and monitoring. Services includes microscopy, Genexpert testing and culture using both solid and liquid media. These methods ensure accurate detection and effective treatment planning for tuberculosis patients.

PCR Section: The PCR section specializes in the detection and quantification of HIV (viral load). Key services include testing for HIV in inconclusive cases, HIV viral load monitoring, and early infant diagnosis (EID) for HIV. These tests are crucial for effective management and treatment of HIV.

Advancement and Commitment

Collaboration and Research: The laboratory collaborates with leading research institutions such as National Institute for Medical Research – Mbeya (NIMR – Mbeya) focusing on HIV, Tuberculosis and associated comorbidities in clinical trials and studies. These partnerships enable the laboratory to stay at the forefront of diagnostic advancements and contribute to treatment and evidence-based medicine.

Patient Services: The laboratory is dedicated to providing excellent patient care. This includes clear communication of test results, patient education on diagnostic procedures, and support services to help patients understand their diagnoses and reason behind testing.

Turnaround Times: With efficient processes and advanced technology, the laboratory is committed to have acceptable turnaround times for test results. Speed is critical for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Training and Education: The laboratory places a strong emphasis on the continuous education and training of its staff. Regular workshops, seminars, and training programs ensure that the team remains knowledgeable about the latest advancements and best practices in laboratory medicine.

Awards and Recognitions: The laboratory has received numerous awards and recognitions for its excellence in diagnostic services, reflecting its commitment to quality and patient care.

Commitment to Improvement: Each section of the hospital laboratory works in harmony to provide comprehensive diagnostic services, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care based on accurate and timely laboratory results. While we strive for perfection, we are committed to continuous improvement, always seeking ways to enhance our services and uphold the highest standards in laboratory medicine. This ongoing commitment is strongly supported by our executive director, Dr. Godlove Mbwanji, and the Ministry of Health, which continually supports these efforts for betterment of patient care.
