Welcome to the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, where we are dedicated to providing exceptional care and pioneering advancements in women's health. Our campus is located about 3 km from the main hospital.

What we do?

We provide modern comprehensive screening, diagnostic and treatments. We provide equitable, accessible and quality primary health care for all women. We handle high risk pregnancies including those complicated with medical conditions. We perform Routine surgeries for common obstetrical and gynaecological conditions as well as complicated surgeries for complex conditions. We deliver more babies than any other facility in the region. We do teaching, research and consultancy. We are dedicated to providing women and their families with the most advanced care available.

Our team and expertise

Our team comprises of more than 12 highly skilled specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as other clinical staff including general practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory personnel, all committed to providing the highest standard of care and expertise. Our team is trained to offer operative and non-operative deliveries. Our campus also offers on-site supportive services such as pharmacy, radiological/imaging and laboratory services.

Subspecialist and Super Specialist Services

Our department is getting ready to provide advanced infertility treatment by using Assisted reproductive technology which include In vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF); Intrauterine Insemination (IUI); Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI); and Frozen embryo transfer (FET). We are also about to start performing minimally invasive gynaecological surgeries laparoscopically. We are dedicated to helping families grow and thrive, and this is at the core of our mission.

Outpatient Services

Our outpatient services operate with precision and dedication across 9 OPD rooms, ensuring comprehensive care every weekday:

  • Monday and Thursday: Obstetric clinics
  • Tuesday and Friday: Gynecological clinics
  • Wednesday: Paediatric/neonatal clinic

We proudly serve an average of 130-150 outpatients daily, providing accessible and expert medical care.

Inpatient Services

Our inpatient services are designed to meet the diverse needs of our patients, featuring three categories of wards:

  • General Wards: Including labour, antenatal, gynaecology, and postnatal wards.
  • Private Wards: Offering a 48-bed capacity for those seeking additional privacy and comfort.
  • VIP Ward: Providing exclusive care with 12 beds and a dedicated examination room.
  • ICU: We also provide ICU services to those serious sick mothers
  • Neonatal UNIT with capacity of 60 beds

Operative Services

Our state-of-the-art surgical facilities include three major operating theatres where we perform both planned and emergency procedures:

Operative Days:

  • Tuesday: Planned obstetric operations
  • Wednesday: Major planned gynaecological operations
  • Thursday: Planned obstetric operations
  • Friday: planned gynaecological operations

Common Major Procedures:

  • Caesarean section
  • Simple and Radical abdominal Hysterectomy
  • Vaginal hysterectomy
  • Myomectomy
  • Laparotomy
  • Fistula repair
  • Simple and Radical Vulvectomy
  • Perineorrhaphy

Minor Procedures:

  • Evacuations
  • Family planning (vasectomy, BTL, implants, IUCD)
  • Spontaneous vaginal deliveries (SVD)
  • Cervical Cerclage
  • Dilatation and curettage

Community Services

Our reach extends beyond the hospital through various outreach programs, including:

  • Maternal Mortality Auditing and Mentorship in all hospitals and health centres located in regions of Mbeya, Songwe and Rukwa.
  • Cervical Cancer Screening: Bringing essential screening services to the community.

Educational Opportunities

Our department offers a master's program in obstetrics and gynecology, with a duration of 4 years, under the ECSACOG fellowship. This program is dedicated to training future champions in women's health, committed to excellence and compassionate care.
